Crunchy bacon spread throughout this burger, the nutty cheese on top and the sweet caramelized onions makes this a gourmet burger in every way.
Serves: 4
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
1 1/2 lbs Ground Chuck
Salt & Pepper
5 Bacon Slices, chopped
2 Onions, thinly sliced
2 Tbsp Butter
1 tsp Salt
2 tsp Sugar
Swiss Cheese, 4 large slices
4 Pretzel Rolls (Substitute: Kaiser Buns)
Directions:
Preheat the grill to high.
In a skillet over medium heat add the bacon pieces and render out until bacon is crisp, about 10 minutes; stir occasionally. Once bacon has become crisp, drain on a paper towel.
In a separate large pan over medium heat add in the butter, onions and salt. Cover the pan and allow for the onions to sweat for 5 minutes. Take the lid off and sprinkle the sugar over top and stir occasionally. After about 20 minutes the onions will begin to caramelize, stir often at this point to avoid the onions burning rather than caramelizing. The onions are done when they are sweet in taste and a walnut color.
While the onions are caramelizing, take the ground chuck and the rendered bacon and mix together well. Evenly divide the meat into four sections and form patties. Season liberally with salt and pepper.
Place burgers onto a screaming hot grill and cook for 6 minutes on one side and 5 minutes on the other side for a medium-well burger. Add the swiss cheese slices on top of each burger and grill for an additional minute to allow for the cheese to melt.
Take the burgers off of the grill, lower the heat slightly and place the pretzel buns cut side down to slightly toast the buns; about 1 minute.
Assemble the burger by placing the bacon-swiss burger on top of the pretzel bun, and generously top with caramelized onions, then place the top of the pretzel bun over the caramelized onions. Serve with a condiment of your choice and enjoy!
